15k Formentera Sunset Run

The 15K Formentera Night Run reaffirms its commitment to sustainability sealing its commitment to SavePosidonia

The 15K Formentera Night Run will not only be born with the desire to promote sport and healthy lifestyle habits on the island. It also aims to serve as a vehicle for safeguarding Formentera’s natural environment across the length and breadth of the island… and under the waters of the Mediterranean Sea itself.

Thus, the race to be held on 5 October announces a new alliance, this time with Save Posidonia Project, an initiative of the Consell Insular of the island of Formentera to promote sustainable tourism and launch an action plan for the conservation of oceanic Posidonia, a marine plant of vital importance for the future of the island.

The organisation has formalised a donation and also offers participants the option of making individual donations during the registration process.

Born in 2017, Save Posidonia Project has managed to sponsor more than 130,000 square metres of posidonia in the maritime environment of Formentera, an action that has also managed to bring to the international arena the need to protect natural resources, even if they are found under the depths of the sea.

Thus, the 15K Formentera Night Run reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the environment, serving as a loudspeaker and tool for crowdfunding of this association.

Posidonia is an Underwater World Heritage Site
Posidonia oceanica is mainly responsible for the turquoise colour of the waters of Ibiza and Formentera. It is a marine plant, not algae, endemic to the Mediterranean, that is, it only grows here, which is why it is of fundamental importance in its marine-beach-dune ecosystem.

Posidonia meadows are responsible for fixing CO2 while producing oxygen and protecting the sandy coastline against erosion. In 1999 the meadow of the Natural Park of the Salt Flats of Ibiza and Formentera was declared a World Heritage Site due to the great importance of these formations for the environment and the biodiversity of the area. Posidonia, in addition to protecting the coasts, also combats climate change and the formation of sediments. At present, this underwater plant is seriously threatened by activities such as anchoring, pollution, dumping and fishing.

Helping to halt its disappearance and promote its conservation is everyone’s responsibility. Anyone can help in this protection from as little as €1/m2 seabed through the website saveposidoniaproject.org.
